Academic Language Therapy (ALT)
ALT is a systematic, multisensory, phonics-based approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling. Students are instructed in phonemic awareness, letter recognition, decoding, spelling, fluency, comprehension, handwriting, vocabulary, and oral and written expression. Students may additionally work with Latin and Greek roots, advanced vocabulary in expository passages, and metacognitive strategies for reading and writing.
Students are taught that writing is a process, with clear steps and distinct objectives. Given the opportunity to write about topics that interest them, students are guided through the process from inception to the finalization of written work and are introduced to different modes and genres of writing.
A scientific, researach-based hierarchy of handwriting activities help students learn specific strokes for specific letters, each with a spoken mnemonic to cue the associated movements. Students start with a large model on the board, “skywrite” with large gestures, and then move to paper for trace and copy practice before working with lined paper of decreasing spacing.
Our multisensory math instruction emphasizes deep conceptual understanding. First, concepts are introduced at the concrete level with manipulatives, then expanded upon with pictorial representations, and ultimately problems are solved at the abstract level. Number sense strategies help students achieve fluency with basic facts, and a model-drawing approach helps students systematically solve word problems with confidence.
Tutoring placements and quarterly schedules are determined according to student needs and availability in combination with tutor availability and subject area expertise.
Tutoring sessions are one hour per day at Rawson Saunders School.
